The Farm Progress Show is adding a new aerial dimension to its annual lineup with the debut of a dedicated Drone Zone, the first time large spray applicator drones will fly as part of the event. The demonstrations are scheduled daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the north fields, near the traditional field demonstration area.
The Drone Zone will operate in a 500-by-500-foot plot, where drones will spray water over standing or harvested corn to illustrate their application capabilities. Spectators can watch from a 40-by-60-foot tent that includes a large screen streaming a live feed from the drones’ onboard cameras. This setup ensures visitors can observe operations either in the field or through first-person visuals.
Up to five companies are expected to participate, including Missouri-based Agri Spray Drones, which distributes EAVision equipment, and Bestway Ag, which will showcase DJI spray drones. The demonstrations will be coordinated by Agri Spray Drones and conducted throughout the three-day show.
Because agricultural spray drones are subject to strict Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversight, considerable preparation was required to bring the Drone Zone to the event. Regulations stipulate that pilots must be properly credentialed, drones must maintain a minimum distance of 100 feet from spectators, and protective barriers must be in place. Only larger drones are permitted in the demonstration area; smaller aircraft weighing under 55 pounds are excluded.
The Drone Zone is positioned near the established field demonstration plots, where combines and ground equipment are traditionally showcased. Unlike those areas, tram service will not be provided, requiring visitors to walk to the site on the north side of Mound Road. Flight schedules will remain flexible, with takeoffs occurring at the discretion of the demonstration team.
The new feature provides farmers and industry stakeholders with direct exposure to the latest aerial application technologies. By creating a dedicated space for live demonstrations, the Drone Zone highlights how large spray drones are becoming a practical complement to conventional ground machinery. Exhibiting companies will also maintain booths within the main exhibition area, giving attendees the opportunity to ask detailed questions and compare options across multiple brands.
The Drone Zone underscores the growing role of unmanned aerial systems in agriculture, from precision spraying to efficiency improvements in field operations. Its inclusion at the Farm Progress Show reflects both increasing farmer interest and the rapid evolution of drone technology in rural applications.
